“Early during the outbreak of the COVID19 Pandemic, I heard my fellow farmers worry about their canceled Farmers Market after Farmers Market. Their concerns around losing their usual outlets for reaching community. Those shared concerns inspired the Fresher Together BIPOC Harvest Bag. The FT BIPOC Harvest Bag is a project of Fresher Together. We wanted to support our fellow farmers and make it easy for others to support while getting some delicious fresh food.”

What’s the BIPOC Harvest Bag?
This is a collaborative bag of fresh produce, value-added products, honey, herbs, and more from only BIPOC Farmers located from Pembroke to Chicago. The Harvest Bag is one of the first projects to come from Fresher Together, helping local farmers distribute their goods to the community while strengthening the community's connection to the people in our backyards growing and building power against food and agricultural disparities.

Each bag is lovingly curated by Chef Fresh with food staples we love, like honey, and sprinkled with goodies that may be unfamiliar to us. These items are gathered together to help us delight in new ways to relate to food and ancestral cooking traditions. If that sounds a little intimidating, don’t worry, Chef is here to help! Each bag includes an informational packet with uses for the products in the bag as well as recipe ideas from Chef Fresh, who is an expert in making cooking accessible and fun for all. Never hesitate to reach out to Fresher Together for support in making use of everything in your bag!

With each Harvest Bag, Chef Fresh takes some time to gather information about ingredients that we may not typically see in grocery stores and makes an effort to offer a few recipes for what’s in that week’s bag. What’s a value-added product?
Value-added products are foodstuffs that are processed, such as milling wheat into flour or turning peppers into relish, to enhance the ingredients from the original goods that come from the farm. Value-added products are a central part of Fresher Together farms operations as it is a small farm that depends on increasing the value of the produce, herbs, and veggies that come to the farm to sustain itself.
